It would seem developer Mongoose Rodeo has hit on something with their recently-announced Metroidvania Crowsworn, which was revealed on Kickstarter on July 10, and has already crushed its funding goals and two stretch goals. According to the description, Crowsworn is a mix of Hollow KnightBloodborneand Devil May Cry, which could explain the funding success.

Planned for the PC via Steam, with potential ports for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (depending on how development goes), Crowsworn features a hand-drawn graphical style “with a strong design emphasis on explorative platforming, immersive combat, and compelling storytelling.”

The story takes place in the land of Fearanndal. You awaken from a deep slumber in a coffin, buried in an unmarked grave with no memory as to how you got there. Digging yourself out, you happen upon the village Angsthel. The village inhabitants talk about how the world has been cursed by a dark god, resulting in the inhabitants living in perpetual penance for the sins of its fathers. You now have a purpose: find out about this curse, and free Fearanndal.

Armed with a scythe, players will also have pistols at their disposal, as well as Corvian magic powers. You’ll apparently need it, as the combat is fast-paced, relying on combos to defeat your foes.

At the moment, the Kickstarter still has several rewards available for backers, though you’ll have to be quick to snag them, as many of them have already been claimed. Crowsworn is aiming for a 2023 release.
