Amid talks of an upcoming Wedding Crashers 2, Owen Wilson clarified that the project is still in the very early stages of planning. The 52-year-old actor starred alongside Vince Vaughn in the 2005 hit comedy about two bachelors who would regularly crash wedding parties so they can seduce female guests. The film also featured actresses Rachel McAdams and Isla Fischer.

Wedding Crashers became an instant success at the box office, grossing almost $300 million against its $40 million budget. It’s one of the most successful comedy films in the 2000s and cemented Wilson’s and Vaughn’s status as two of the most bankable comedians in Hollywood. For years, fans have been clamoring for a sequel to the hilarious rom-com. Recently, it was reported that a Wedding Crashers 2 script has already been written, with its original director David Dobkin at the helm. Wilson and Vaughn were reportedly onboard to reprise their roles. Despite these reports, Wilson clarified that a Wedding Crashers 2 won’t be happening anytime soon.

Speaking with Variety, the Loki star denied that production for the sequel was about to start this summer. While it’s true that director Dobkin is working on the project and that he’s been communicating with his co-star Vaughn, Wilson insisted that the sequel is still in its early stages of development. Read his statement below:

Some people are saying that you guys are going to be going in August, and that’s not right. If we all agree that we have a good idea, then we’re trying to make something good. But it’s sort of figuring out what that idea would be and if we think we could do something worthwhile.

Wedding Crashers

Rumors of a forthcoming Wedding Crashers sequel were fueled when some of the cast members expressed their enthusiasm to do a follow-up movie. Fisher, who played Vaughn’s quirky and feisty love interest in the movie, said in an interview last year that she’s totally game to reprise her role. Supporting actors Jane Seymour and Christopher Walken also said they would both love to return to their characters. There have been reports that the long-awaited sequel will be released through HBO Max, but this news remains unconfirmed.

While Wilson seemed to downplay the sequel’s progress, fans can bank on the fact that the creatives behind it are intent on planning the project carefully. This only means that they want to produce a well-crafted film that would rise to viewers’ expectations. Wilson himself is no stranger to starring in successful franchises, having done multiple installments of Zoolander, Meet the Fockers, and Night at the Museum. It’s been more than 15 years since the raunchy comedy was released and it’ll be interesting how the Wedding Crashers 2 story can unfold in today’s setting. Hopefully, Wilson and Vaughn will soon come up with the comedic magic needed to give audiences another round of good laughs.
