What WandaVision Episode 4’s End Song Says About Scarlet Witch

Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision Episode 4 – “We Interrupt This Program”

The ending song of WandaVision episode 4, Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)”, is an inspired choice that perfectly reflects what’s going on with the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). WandaVision episode 4 opens up the scope of the show and introduces what’s going on in the real world as multiple agencies led by SWORD have assembled outside of Westview, New Jersey to investigate the strange goings-on centering on Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch’s bizarre TV sitcom reality.

After Wanda forcibly expelled Geraldine AKA Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from Westview, she settled back into her fiction of being the matriarch of a happy TV sitcom family with Vision and their twin baby boys. The episode closed out with the unmistakable and prophetic tune of “Voodoo Chile”, a beloved Jimi Hendrix classic that’s renowned as one of the greatest guitar riff tracks of all-time. Recorded in 1968, “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” is the final song on The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Electric Ladyland album, and it’s a shorter, more intense, and more popular reprise of the album’s 15-minute version of “Voodoo Chile”. The blazing track has permeated pop culture as its been featured in films like Under Siege, Black Hawk Down, and In The Name of the Father. Hulk Hogan even used “Voodoo Chile” as his theme music for several years when he played his Hollywood Hogan character in WCW and WWE.

One of the greatest “supernatural brag songs” ever recorded, the lyrics of “Voodoo Chile” cleverly reflect what Scarlet Witch is doing in WandaVision. At this point in her life, Wanda is obviously so powerful that she can mold and shape her own reality, and she has chosen to build a life for herself as a wife and mother in a quiet, suburban American town that the universe has cruelly denied her. “Voodoo Chile” begins with “Well, I stand up next to a mountain / And I chop it down with the edge of my hand”. These are the words of someone so mighty that they’re essentially a god – and that’s exactly what Scarlet Witch was since Avengers: Endgame when she returned from the Blip and confronted Thanos (Josh Brolin). Even though that iteration of the Mad Titan from 2014 didn’t know who Wanda was, Thanos was quickly humbled and frightened by Scarlet Witch’s fury. Wanda had the power to kill Thanos there, but he escaped Maximoff’s full wrath.

The lyrics “Well, I pick up all the pieces and make an island / Might even raise a little sand” also clearly reflect what Wanda has done in Westview. She picked up the pieces of her shattered life and made a bizarre new one: Scarlet Witch made “an island” in Westview, NJ, isolated from the intrusions of the real world, and she violently rejects anyone trying to break the illusion of the “island” she has made with her Synthezoid husband.

“Picking up all the pieces” also refers to Vision himself, who is now acknowledged as still dead in “We Interrupt This Program”. Wanda was even frightened at the sight of Vision’s broken corpse before she reset her fantasy and restored him back to “life” as her doting husband. Indeed, the lyrics “If I don’t meet you no more in this world / I’ll meet you in the next one and don’t be late” are spot-on as Westview is “the next [world]” Wanda literally made for herself and Vision since they can’t be together in the real world.

Perhaps the most ominous “Voodoo Chile” lyric when it comes to Wanda is “I don’t take no for an answer”. Scarlet Witch is dedicated to maintaining this perfect TV world she created for herself and Vision, but she’s becoming aware that there are now outside forces trying to shatter her dream life. Wanda is outwardly hostile each time her spell is momentarily broken and Scarlet Witch is genuinely frightening when she uses her powers against someone like Geraldine crashing in on her private party. Because Lord knows Wanda Maximoff is the Voodoo Chile of WandaVision and she won’t take “no” for an answer.
