The first look at Disney+’s upcoming TV series Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has arrived in a new trailer. The TV series is billed as a sequel to the three films in the franchise that came before, with Emilio Estevez returning to his role as Gordon Bombay, the high stakes attorney-turned-ice hockey coach.
Since the release of the first Mighty Ducks film in 1992, the concept has produced two sequels, an animated series, and an actual professional hockey team. Estevez has been involved in every film to date and his return for the 10-episode Disney+ series is sure to excite fans of the franchise. Game Changers picks up with the Mighty Ducks team now a high-ranking hockey powerhouse—a far cry from the group of misfits that the first film once used as the source for its story. This time around, a 12-year-old boy called Evan (Brady Noon) is cut from the Ducks, much to the outrage of his mother, Alex (Lauren Graham), who feels that kids should be able to play sports for fun. Rather than accept the defeat, Alex sets to work on getting a different team together, one that allows kids to have fun and play hockey for the pure love of the game. In need of some expertise, she enlists the aid of Bombay.
Though word of The Mighty Ducks becoming a TV series arrived over two years ago, there hasn’t been much in the way of glimpses of what’s to come. Game Changers is currently set to arrive on Disney+ at some point in 2021 and the new series has finally delivered its first official trailer. Thanks to a tweet from hockey analyst Peter Andrianopoulos, the Game Changers trailer can be seen below. It was unveiled during Disney’s Investor Day 2020, in which a huge variety of upcoming Disney productions were revealed.
Fans of the films are sure to be excited by the new trailer, which highlights the TV series’ impressive production value. Sometimes, when a TV series is adapted from a popular film or franchise, the transition from big screen to small takes away from the concept. In the case of Game Changers, were fans not already aware that this is a TV series, it could easily pass as a rebooted movie version of the original. Estevez also looks to have stepped back into the role of Bombay quite effortlessly and, despite the fact that he’s recreating a role that is very similar to the original, it seems like it’s going to work well here.
If there is a potential downside to the upcoming Mighty Ducks: Game Changers TV series, it’s that creating something that has longevity could be an issue. As previously mentioned, the first season is 10 episodes long, and while a second or even third season seems entirely conceivable, the question remains as to how long a story about a hockey team can be drawn out. Nonetheless, Game Changers is set to write a new chapter in the extensive franchise.
