Disco Elysium is returning with The Final Cut, bringing a new twist on the game for newcomers and returning players alike. The updated version of Disco Elysium was announced at tonight’s Game Awards, along with a dozen new game reveals and, of course, the awards themselves.
Released last year, Disco Elysium’s runaway success was a surprise to most, though those who had been following its development already had reason to root for it at the time of its release. The point-and-click detective RPG had a lot of features that set it apart from the crowd, from its gorgeous art style and soundtrack to its bizarrely brilliant “thought cabinet” character progression. Disco Elysium reportedly took a cue from Twitter for the flow of its dialogue, making the philosophical, sometimes surreal adventure feel all the more familiar to players caught in the endless scroll of social media.
Disco Elysium has already gotten one major update since its launch, adding a hardcore mode and widescreen support. Now, it’s getting the even more exciting Final Cut, which seems aimed at bringing back old players as much as thrilling new ones. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut will bring full voice acting – a tremendous feat, given just how much dialogue there is in the game – along with new quests. On top of that, the update’s PlayStation trailer confirmed a PS4 and PS5 release when it launches next spring. Existing PC owners will get the upgrade for free. A press release from developer ZA/UM later announced an Xbox Series X/S version and the long-awaited Switch port coming next summer.
Even before this announcement, Disco Elysium was far from a stranger to The Game Awards. Last year, the game took home awards for Best Role Playing Game, Best Narrative, and Best Independent Game. The wins gave developers from ZA/UM the opportunity to become the first, and probably last, developers ever to shout out Marx and Engels at The Game Awards.
Disco Elysium is a long, often taxing game, so most players probably need a good reason to come back for a repeat playthrough. Adding full voice acting to the massive RPG could be just what’s needed to bring those amateur detectives back. Console devotees without PCs are getting an even better deal, getting the chance to experience one of the best RPGs ever in its fully upgraded form the first time around, if they just stay patient a little longer.
