Grand Theft Auto V is by far one of the top-selling games of all time, yet several years after release, the most profitable section of the game, GTA Online, is still plagued with poor user-interface, rampant hacking, and a heavy focus on microtransactions. Rockstar recently announced two GTA Online major updates for this year. One is a summer update that will offer up a “Fun mix of diverse new content from the game’s massive array of experiences to play.” Later this year though, Rockstar says they will release the biggest update ever for GTA Online — which is saying a lot considering the online mode has been out for almost seven years now. Community feedback is driving a number of changes to GTA Online, so hopefully, Rockstar will include a few quality of life updates desperately needed in the game.

The GTA Online summer update coming in the next month or two seems to include more filler content to hold players off until the big update arrives later this year. Most likely a few cars, weapons, and maybe a game mode or two will be added. For the major GTA Online update, however, Rockstar is promising a new take on Heists in a completely new location, so there’s a chance the update will include a familiar place like Liberty City. The update is most likely to arrive towards the end of the year, to round out the current generation’s roadmap before Rockstar goes all-in on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
GTA Online’s new update is promising to be the biggest yet, but adding new content, heists, and game modes won’t be enough. After several years, GTA Online needs to focus on removing major bugs, uniting the player base, and focusing on quality of life updates to keep the 2013 game up to date. While the introduction of new locales to explore and extra missions sounds great, it won’t be nearly as enjoyable if the problems that have afflicted the game for years are not resolved.
GTA Online’s Update Needs to Fix The UI
The user-interface in GTA Online is a mess. Every element from the menu, to loading into game modes, to using the cellular phone are incredibly sluggish and detract from the enjoyment in the game. GTA Online’s new update should include a revamped user-interface that is snappy and quick to navigate between menus, options, and requesting players to join online games. Currently, loading into a game with friends or randoms online has players sitting through long loading screens, which can make many unmotivated to even play the game if they only have a few minutes.
GTA Online’s next update desperately needs to clean out some of the multiplayer modes available. There are hundreds of different multiplayer modes, which sounds great in theory with the plethora of play options in GTA Online, but so many of them, like the races and Arena War, are nearly impossible to get into. It’s not worth having as many options if they are barely used. Consolidating the number of modes would promote a healthier and livelier online community that plays together more often than waiting in a loading room.
Since inception, modders and hackers have harassed players in GTA Online, but luckily Rockstar is very aware and has been working to ban those who violate community rules. Hundreds of thousands of players have been banned from the game already, but hopefully, GTA Online’s new update will bring some anti-cheat measures as well. Many online players are also using modded servers like FiveM instead of the regular GTA Online ones, which splits up the player base. Players flock to FiveM servers to roleplay, escape from hackers, and enjoy the online without having to grind for hours to make a decent amount of money. If GTA Online’s next update is able to fix these issues, players may find themselves returning to the official game servers.
It will be quite some time before GTA Online’s big update. In the meantime, players can look forward to the summer update coming in the next few months that will include some extra content to hold everyone over until the end of the year. Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online are coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021 with new additional content as well.
