Director James Cameron will resume filming his planned Avatar sequels in New Zealand following a halt due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Producer Jon Landau broke the news on his Instagram, sharing a photo from the set of the film along with a message, stating “Our Avatar sets are ready — and we couldn’t be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week. Check out the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel (bottom) and the Picador jetboat (top) — can’t wait to share more.”

Production will resume next week, having shut down back in March. Avatar will be the first major Hollywood production to resume following an almost industry-wide shutdown in March.

Avatar 2, the first of a series of 4 planned sequels to debut every other December through 2027, is scheduled for a December 17, 2021 theatrical release.
