March 2020 kicked off in style with free downloads of Batman: The Enemy Within and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 giving gamers two great free tales to get stuck into. Today though, as the middle of March rolls into play, the Xbox Games With Gold scheme is delivering the goods once more, with free downloads of Sonic Generations and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero both now in place.

A native Xbox 360 title that will happily run on Xbox One via the power of Backwards Compatibility, Sonic Generations usually comes with a £14.99 price tag attached. Until the end of March 2020 though, Xbox Live Gold members can get a free download moving, allowing them to head into the Sonic universe and get collecting some rings.
With the usual cast of Sonic friends and foes in place, it’ll be up to you to help the team get together and work out what, and who, is behind the chaotic ‘time holes’ that have hit in Sonic Generations, in a game that first released way back in 2011. That’s not to say it won’t cover the bases for many though and whether you’re a fan of Sonic, or are just looking to fill your digital Xbox library for new games to tide you over for the next few months, it’ll certainly cover the bases.
Sitting pretty alongside that free Sonic option is a much newer title, one that received some great acclaim when it dropped on Xbox One in 2016. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero sees everyone’s favourite purple-haired half-genie become a hero with Shantae’s first HD foray onto the latest consoles, asking us to help her take down the evil Risky Boots.
It goes without saying that Shantae’s iconic Hair-Whip attack is in place, as is her Belly Dance routine which sees her transforming into wondrous forms, attempting to take down the foes ahead of her.
The usual asking price of £15.99 has been removed for all Xbox Live Gold members until the middle of April 2020, after which a couple of new Games With Gold titles will take its place.
Should you not own either Sonic Generations or Shantae: Half-Genie Hero on Xbox yet have a valid Xbox Live Gold subscription to hand then it’s all a bit of a no-brainer – head over to the Xbox Store on the links below and grab your free games right now. You’ll also still be able to nab the free Batman title too – but you’ll need to be super quick on that one as it won’t be long before that goes back up in price.
