Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says that a trans character will appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film that is currently in production. Speaking at a New York Film Academy event, Feige said that a trans character would appear in a Marvel movie “soon” – though he didn’t specify which film.
“Yes, absolutely yes,” Feige told an audience member who asked if a trans character would play a role in an upcoming MCU project (via Deadline). “And very soon. In a movie we’re shooting right now.”
It’s unclear exactly which Marvel Studios films are currently in production. November’s Eternals is confirmed to be shooting, while May’s Black Widow may still be in production. Likewise, the one-time Fox production New Mutants may currently be undergoing reshoots.
None of the announced actors for Eternals or Black Widow are openly trans, nor are any of the known characters portrayed as trans in comic books. However, Eternals, specifically, has cast several characters with actors whose identities differ from the usual portrayal of their comic counterparts.
Films coming in 2021 that have not been announced as currently in production are Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the untitled Spider-Man 3, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Spider-Man: Far From Home, the film directly preceding the untitled sequel, which is expected to enter production this summer , featured trans actor Zach Barack as the eponymous character Zach, in the minor role of one of Peter Parker’s classmates. Far From Home was technically a Sony Pictures production, as will be the upcoming sequel.
Likewise, Netflix’s Jessica Jones season 3 featured trans actor Aneesh Sheth who played trans character Gillian on the show – though Jessica Jones was a Marvel Television production, and its MCU-canon status is unclear.
