Now that season 2 has finally released, The End of the F***ing World season 3 can expand on the story in various ways. The Channel 4-Netflix series is based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel, and explores the ups and down of two runaway teens. The End of the F***ing World season 2 released in November 2019, two years after the first season debuted.

In The End of the F***ing World season 2, Alex Lawther and Jessica Harden reprise their roles as James and Alyssa, respectively. The storyline picks up two years after James was nearly killed by authorities, this coming after he’d murdered someone – a serial killer – who tried to take advantage of Alyssa. The End of the F***ing World season 2 brings the two main characters back together, but only after Alyssa gets married and plans to live a relatively normal life. When James shows up, Alyssa gives in to her feelings, and the two hit the road once again.

As of now, series creator Charlie Covell doesn’t plan to move forward with The End of the F***ing World season 3. During a recent interview with Radio Times, she said “I think, for me, that’s it now. Yeah, that’s done. I think to try and eke more out would be wrong, I like where we’ve left it.” Then again, the comments were made prior to The End of the F***ing World season 2’s release. If Covell changes her mind, here’s what might happen.

Because The End of the F***ing World isn’t technically a Netflix Original, it’s difficult to pinpoint a timeframe for an announcement about The End of the F***ing World season 3. In general, Netflix usually waits three-to-six weeks after new season releases before announcing renewals or cancellations. With this particular series, though, The End of the F***ing World season 2 wasn’t ordered by Channel 4 until August 2018 – 10 months after the original series premiere. If The End of the F***ing World season 3 does happen, the announcement will undoubtedly be made sometime in 2020, at least if Covell and company want to continue the story.

If The End of the F***ing World season 3 is produced, new episodes likely won’t release until 2021. Thus far, only 16 episodes have been made, and all are approximately 30 minutes in duration or less. Given that critics haven’t been especially impressed with The End of the F***ing World season 2 (despite strong performances from the two leads), it’s possible that Covell may choose to end with a stronger group of episodes.

The End Of The F***ing World Season 3 Story Details

In a way, The End of the F***ing World season 2 finale does indeed feel like a proper ending. James and Alyssa reveal their love for one another, and hold hands while gazing at the horizon. So, what happens next? For The End of the F***ing World season 3, James and Alyssa may try to live a normal life, but feel pulled back into a lifestyle that’s viscerally thrilling. They don’t want to harm anybody, of course, but their personalities could lead them into some sticky situations, leaving both characters to muse about whether they’re right for each other. Since James has trouble performing sexually because of his gunshot wounds, the couple may worry less about children and focus more on simply being together, and doing their best to figure things out along the way.
