As Superman is about to arrive in theaters, James Gunn already has more plans in store for the Man of Steel in the DC Universe. After years of being gone from the big screen, David Corenswet’s Superman movie is about to bring the DC icon back as part of Gunn’s DCU franchise.

With the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” already working on multiple films and series at DC Studios, many are curious about where Superman will show up after 2025. While the Superman film will be the proper beginning for the Man of Tomorrow, things are just getting started for Corenswet’s hero.

During a new interview with Omelete, Gunn shared that when Corenswet had asked him what he was working on in terms of future projects, and according to the DC Studios co-CEO, it definitely involves Superman. Gunn shared the following tease:

James Gunn: He was asking me what I was working on….He knows that I’m working on something. He knows he’s a part of it. He doesn’t know what it is…literally nothing.

The next project Gunn has coming out that he was involved with as both a writer and director was Peacemaker season 2, which will arrive on August 21 on HBO Max. There have been theories that Corenswet’s Superman may show up for a cameo in Peacemaker season 2, but that has yet to be confirmed.

What James Gunn’s Superman Update Means For The DCU

When it comes to a Superman 2 sequel, Gunn has shared that while he’s working on a mystery project, it’s not a direct Superman sequel, even if it involves Krypton’s last son. While Corenswet may not fully know himself yet what it is, that may hint that it is a movie or TV show that perhaps doesn’t center Superman as the main character, but a crucial player.

But what is worth taking into account is that DC Studios is not going to make fans wait for too long to see Corenswet’s Superman in the DCU. It’s possible that Corenswet’s Superman is in the DCU mystery project that Gunn has heavily been teasing, as he shared previously, “My favorite thing has not been announced at all.”

Whether or not that will get announced in 2025 after the release of Superman remains to be seen. But it’s exciting that Gunn and DC Studios want to make sure Superman is around sooner, rather than being absent from the DCU until his next installment.

While time will tell when Gunn may announce exactly what the title of this project is that will involve Corenswet’s Superman, it will be fun to see how the DCU utilizes the DC legend across the franchise. Given how long Superman has been missing from the big screen – excluding Henry Cavill’s brief Black Adam cameo in 2022 – the DCU looks promising for the Man of Steel.

It also wouldn’t be shocking if Corenswet shows up as Superman sooner rather than later, especially if his movie ends up being a huge hit. But before fans see him anywhere else, they can catch Corenswet in Superman starting on July 11.
