Killer Kites

I am an unapologetic fan of schlock cinema because it allows those who are willing to engage a sense of catharsis where we can escape our reality and stop taking life so seriously for a moment. Yes, a lot of the films that fall under the schlock cinema heading might look like utter garbage on the surface, but that’s by design. Take the horror film Killer Kites, for example. It’s nonsensical, cheaply made, unstructured, and illogical, but it’s supposed to be. The filmmakers infuse the flick with whimsicality, campy humor, and an unbridled appreciation for the ridiculous, making the picture a surprisingly palatable escape for the right audience.

Do you think you may be the right audience for Killer Kites? If the film sounds like your cup of tea, you may want to give it a whirl via Tubi.

If you’re not quite ready to make a decision, perhaps some additional insight will be useful. I previously critiqued Killer Kites for Dread Central and had this to say: “Perhaps the film’s greatest strength is that it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Clocking in at just over an hour, Killer Kites is the perfect snack-sized horror picture to put on when you need a good laugh but don’t feel like making a sizable time commitment.”

Bite-sized horror film Killer Kites comes to us courtesy of Paul Dale and Austin Frosch. The pair co-directed the flick with Frosch penning the script. The duo leans into dumb humor, even featuring a theme song about evil kites.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the majority of characters within are scripted as completely moronic. Thankfully, lead actor Manon Pages brings a modicum of common sense that somehow legitimizes the film to the extent that is even possible. Her character carries the viewer through the baseline of silliness and serves as the sole voice of reason.

Plot crunch per Google Movies: After inheriting a mysterious kite from her grandmother, Abby (Pages) digs into its strange past to string together the truth as people start to die and the kite starts to have a life of its own.

So, there it is, Killer Kites is silly, whimsical, lighthearted and hilarious. If you dig this type of filmmaking, you can find the flick streaming on Tubi!

Keep an eye out for more recommendations from the streaming space in the very near future. Until then, you can keep tabs on me via social media if you’re so inclined. I am active on Threads as @FunWithHorror.
