Gi-hun’s fate in Squid Game season 3’s ending may seem surprising, but it was prophesied by another character almost six months ago. Since Squid Game has always taken a no-holds-barred approach to character deaths, many viewers were expecting Gi-hun to meet a tragic doom towards the end.

However, given how Squid Game is jam-packed with many unpredictable twists and turns, it was hard to predict the circumstances that would lead to the end of Gi-hun’s journey. There was also the possibility of Gi-hun succumbing to his darker tendencies and becoming the next Front Man.

Interestingly, though, even though many aspects of Gi-hun’s ending story arc in Squid Game season 3 are shocking, his fate was subtly foreshadowed by one character’s prophecy. This prophecy was revealed in one of the most confusing but seemingly important scenes from Squid Game season 2.

The Shaman Seemingly Had A Vision Of His Dark Future

During Squid Game season 2’s Mingle game, Gi-hun and his crew briefly take Player 044, Seon-nyeo, on their team and take her with them to one of the rooms in the game. Soon after entering the room with the players, she looks at Jun-hee and then back at Gi-hun before saying that Gi-hun only made it this far because he has a purpose to fulfill.

The scene seems confusing because she does not explain what she means. However, she seems to imply that Gi-hun’s eventual purpose will have something to do with Jun-hee and her baby. Unfortunately, since the Shaman often harms her own credibility with tall claims, it is hard to take her too seriously in Squid Game season 3.

He Almost Had Nothing To Lose After Jung-bae’s Death

When Gi-hun first showed up at the games in Squid Game season 1, he did not have a lot to lose. However, the character still cared about his daughter and even had an elderly mother to look after. Unfortunately, after his daughter moved overseas and his mother passed away, Gi-hun had nothing but his prize money.

The only thing that drove him in season 2 was his quest for revenge against the game’s creators and organizers. To his dismay, the Front Man even took that away from him by stopping his rebellion and killing his friend, Jung-bae. As a result, Gi-hun had no purpose in Squid Game season 3’s initial moments.

Things changed, however, when Geum-ja left him with the responsibility of looking after Jun-hee and her baby. She helped him realize that he may never be able to rectify his past mistakes but could still find a semblance of redemption by saving the baby and the mother. This gave Gi-hun a newfound sense of purpose, proving that the shaman was right.

Even Though Audiences Are Upset, Gi-hun’s Death Was Inevitable

Gi-hun’s Survival Would Have Been Even More Divisive

Even if Gi-hun had survived towards the end of Squid Game season 3, it seems likely that his conclusive arc would have divided viewers. The reason being that many expected his narrative to end with a final act of sacrifice that would give him some redemption.

In previous seasons, Gi-hun’s narrative was all about his selfish desire to either earn a grand prize or exact revenge on those who wronged him. He was often so blinded by his selfish pursuits that he failed to see how they harmed others around him.

Towards the end of Squid Game season 3, however, he finally gives up on his sense of self, and, for once, thinks about the greater good. His sacrificial demise in the show’s final moments highlights how he has learned from his mistakes and hopes to make up for them by ending the overarching cycle of violence for good.
