Several Broadway shows – Smash, Floyd Collins and The Last Five Years – went out on high notes last week, with last-chancers boosting box office for all three productions.
Smash, the musical based on the TV series, saw the most significant jump, with grosses climbing $401,499 to $977,805 for the week ending June 22 (the previous week was a seven-performance week). Still, the Imperial Theatre was only 84% filled.
Floyd Collins, the Tina Landau musical at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont, saw a significant increase of $258,106 to $754,317, with a strong 91% of seats filled. The Last Five Years, starring Adrienne Warren and Nick Jonas, saw a $123,154 gain to $604,088, with attendance at 86% of capacity at the Hudson.
The uptick in Broadway box office wasn’t limited to the exiting shows, though, with most of the 38 productions reporting gains over the previous week. Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club, which has posted an October 19 closing date, was up $182,267 to $944,982.
Dead Outlaw, closing June 29, was up $25,510 to $475,175 and Real Women Have Curves, also closing June 29, was up $143,292 to $508,544, but the attendance levels for both shows remained stubbornly below optimum levels. Same for Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends (same closing date), which took in just $317,363 with 72% of the Friedman’s seats occupied.
Two other about-to-close shows, Glengarry Glen Ross (June 28) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (June 29) did their usual sell-out business, with the former taking in $2,234,152 and the latter $1,655,861 for seven performances.
Other sell-outs for the week were included Hamilton, John Proctor Is The Villain, Just In Time, Maybe Happy Ending, Oh, Mary! (Cole Escola’s final week in the title role), The Outsiders and Wicked. Coming very close to selling out, with at least 97% of seats occupied, were & Juliet, Aladdin, Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, Hadestown, Operation Mincemeat, Purpose, Sunset Blvd., The Book of Mormon and, at 99.8%, The Lion King.
In addition to Glengarry Glen Ross, three productions topped the $2 million mark: Top earner Wicked ($2,484,800), Hamilton ($2,169,797) and The Lion King ($2,141,944).
Call Me Izzy starring Jean Smart in a critically lauded solo performance, was still looking for its audience, with attendance at only 62% of capacity at Studio 54, with a take of $604,213.
In all, the 38 Broadway shows on the boards grossed $43,169,396, a jump of 10% over the previous week and 17% over last year at this time. Attendance was 328,951, up 5% over the previous week and 12% over last season.
Season to date, Broadway, in the 4th week of the 2025-26 season, has grossed $173,112,264, up about 22% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 1,305,709 up 13%.
