The Mike Flanagan’s Carrie news doesn’t stop coming! Hot on the heels of the announcement that Heather Graham, Kate Siegel, and Cassandra Naud were among the latest cast in the upcoming Prime Video series, Flanagan himself has shared that filming is underway for his take on the iconic text by horror maestro Stephen King.
The announcement came in the form of an Instagram post from Flanagan, featuring a single image of the first slate and a caption that simply reads, “And we’re off.”
Check out the post below:
Stephen King’s original 1974 novel Carrie is the story of Carrie White, a teenage girl subjected to constant abuse both by her peers and by her extremely religious mother. When she gets her first period, the telekinetic powers she’s secretly had since she was a child start to grow. With the prospect of a prom date, she begins to find confidence and power within herself. But, just when she thinks there’s hope for her future, a prom day prank pushes Carrie too far.
Flanagan is the first to adapt this story into a limited series, this time telling Carrie’s story across eight episodes. Brian De Palma first adapted the novel into the iconic 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. That was followed by Katt Shea‘s 1999 sequel The Rage: Carrie 2, a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 reboot starring Chloe Grace Moretz and directed by Kimberly Peirce.
Meet The Cast of Carrie
Summer H. Howell (Seed of Chucky, Hunter Hunter) stars in the series as the titular Carrie, which caused some stir among horror fans. Howell’s casting marked another point in the disturbing trend to erase King’s original description of Carrie White, which depicted the teenage girl as fat and covered in acne. As Dread Central’s managing editor, Josh Korngut, explained in a poignant editorial,
Carrie’s fatness and acne are an essential part of the cruelty she endures and part of why her eventual eruption of rage feels both earned and tragic. This element, however, has been systematically erased in every significant adaptation of the novel to date as conventionally thin young women continue to embody Carrie. From Sissy Spacek to Chloe Grace Moretz, filmmakers have reimagined Carrie as looking just like the popular girls: skinny, blonde, and gorgeous. That then begs the question: Does having a fat protagonist disrupt the chances of a film or series succeeding?
While Flanagan hasn’t offered any comment on fan questions about this fact, it’ll be interesting to see how he and his creative team tackle Carrie’s character, especially across eight episodes rather than within a contained two-hour-or-less narrative.
Samantha Sloyan will face off with Howell as Carrie’s deranged mother, Margaret White. Heather Graham, Amber Midthunder, Cassander Naud, Tahmon Penikett, Mapuana Makia, Naika Toussaint, Dalainey Hayles, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, and Rowan Danielle
Former Flanagan collaborators Kate Siegel, Matthew Lillard (The Life Of Chuck), Michael Trucco (Hush), Katee Sackhoff (Oculus), Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass), Crystal Balint (The Fall Of The House Of Usher), and Danielle Klaudt (The Fall Of The House Of Usher) will also appear in Carrie.
