Sex And The City Is Finally Giving Long-Awaited Focus To One Of The Franchise's Most Underrated Duos After 23 Years

The Sex and the City sequel series, And Just Like That…, has finally seen the potential in one of the franchise’s most underused character combinations. Though And Just Like That season 3 started surprisingly strong, the new season’s third episode, “Carrie Golightly,” veers slightly off course. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan’s (John Corbett) long-distance-not-really-a-relationship sputters forward, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Harry (Evan Handler) try to recapture their youth, and Seema (Sarita Choudhury) and Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker) deal with major changes in their careers.

One of the best things about an ensemble series like And Just Like That is the unexpected character dynamics the writers can experiment with. Though most of And Just Like That’s characters have known each other for years (even decades), the show is still finding ways to surprise us, even during its weaker episodes. And Just Like That season 3, episode 3, gives us one such delightful and unexpected dynamic duo, and I’d love to see more of their interactions in the future. Should we expect additional impromptu shopping trips as the season continues?

They Both Deserve A New, Drama-Free Friendship

As the York-Goldenblatt household, along with Uncle Anthony (Mario Cantone) and his studly Italian boyfriend, Giuseppe (Sebastiano Pigazzi), sit down for dinner, Charlotte and Harry share their experiences of being the oldest (and most boring) people in their respective workspaces. Charlotte feels like she’s missing out on genuine networking and sales opportunities by not joining her hip, young coworkers at all the art world’s after-parties and after-after parties, and Harry feels that the younger lawyers at his firm see him as “Spongebob Square Partner,” the boss who does nothing but work, go home, and sleep.

Harry decides to join Charlotte for a club outing, hoping to prove that he’s still fun and flexible. Of course, his teenage daughters ask him what he plans to wear, as his “high-waisted mom jeans” won’t cut it. Enter Carrie Bradshaw, who, while having made some very questionable fashion choices throughout her tenure on Sex and the City and AJLT, is nevertheless seen as the “cool” person of their friend group. What follows is a charming and amusing shopping scene in which Carrie helps Harry pick out a new pair of jeans.

Do the benefits of a long-distance relationship outweigh the headaches? I suppose Carrie will eventually find out.

Given how long Charlotte and Harry have been together, it’s almost criminal that Harry and Carrie have shared so little one-on-one screen time in both iterations of the show. Their dynamic is funny and light-hearted. You can tell they enjoy spending time together. They’re both cracking jokes; Harry even suggests they start a podcast called “Harry and Carrie go shopping!” (I must admit, I love that their names rhyme).

They deserve another friendship in their lives that doesn’t come with so much baggage, and I truly think they could be good for each other. Carrie needs someone a little less judgmental and drama-free as she deals with her dragging Aidan crisis, and Harry deserves to spend a bit more time with the girls and feel cool. What’s not to love?

And Just Like That Should Take Advantage Of Its Status As A Sequel

Harry and Carrie’s shopping interlude is brief, rudely interrupted by Seema’s understandably frustrating job issues, but it makes me want to see them together all the more. The whole point of doing a revival series like And Just Like That is to explore the characters’ worlds and their lives through different perspectives and relationships. While AJLT has included new, compelling characters like Seema and Lisa, giving the core friend group dynamic a bit of freshness (though I still miss Kim Cattrall’s Samantha dearly), there’s something to be said for including unexpected new side friendships too.

The whole point of doing a revival series like And Just Like That is to explore the characters’ worlds and their lives through different perspectives and relationships.

That’s especially true for character combinations that could have been explored in the franchise’s first iteration but weren’t. And Just Like That is giving Sex and the City a second chance, for better or worse. I’m all in if it can provide more fun, light-hearted, and genuinely intriguing friendships like Harry and Carrie’s burgeoning relationship. If And Just Like That… wants to move forward and carve out a new, independent legacy, then this might just be the way to do it.
