For their feature film debut, Man Finds Tape, writer/directors Paul Gandersman and Peter S. Hall decided to go the route of a pseudo-documentary that emulates the style of countless true crime specials that pepper every streaming service. However, Gandersman and Hall wanted to subvert audience expectations to deliver a wholly unexpected tale about a small town and its terrifying secrets.
In the new pseudo-documentary:
After receiving a cryptic call, documentarian Lynn Page returns to her small Texas hometown to investigate haunting footage of events no one can remember taking place. But her brother Lucas’ controversial past with a viral web series called ‘Man Finds Tape’ forces Lynn to question if he, or anyone in their town, can be trusted. And the arrival of a stranger with chaotic intentions forces Lynn to confront her family’s involvement with the deadly monster preying on Larkin, TX.
Before the film’s world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, we spoke with Gandersman and Hall about special effects in found footage, figuring out their pacing, and accidentally overcomplicating things.
