The cat was prematurity out of the bag according to Matthew Lillard who is returning to the Scream franchise even though his character supposedly died in the first film. The horror brigade jumped on that news almost as it happened, even though it was supposed to be a surprise, or so Lillard says in an interview with Coming Soon.

“Oh, yeah. Yeah. I was definitely not supposed to be announced until the trailer,” he told the publication. “But I think that we were all pretty conscious of the fact that, you know, once you start saying ‘Scream 7 shooting,’ the people are gonna start paying attention to the general area. So sneaking me in and sneaking me out would’ve been very difficult. So eventually we broke the news ourselves before I got a chance to leak. So, it is what it is. It’s modern technology, and I don’t think anyone was unduly surprised. I’ll put it that way.”

Even though his return has been spoiled the star is really looking forward to what people will think.

“I was pretty excited about it,” he says. “I had a lot of questions for Kevin when he called. I’m excited, really ecstatic to be back. I hope fans are happy. I hope people are excited to see me, and I just hope I don’t screw it up. I mean, you know, I think people are gonna love it. And then I think the script’s great. I think the cast is fantastic, so I’m really hopeful that it’s a home run.”

Kevin Williamson is the creator of the first film and has returned periodically to assist in writing new scripts for the franchise. This year he returned in a different capacity; he’s directing, something he hasn’t done since 1999 for Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Lillard explains what it was like reconnecting with Williamson.

“Oh, great,” he says. “It’s like old friends, right? And Neve’s on set, and working with Neve and seeing her is great. I think that we’re all really hopeful that… look, I think the journey continuing, I think fans are gonna be excited. It’s got that vibe of like old school Scream, and so I just think we’re all really hopeful that we’re building what the fans will love and appreciate.”

Scream 7 has had its share of ups and downs over the past two years, but it seems like they have corrected their course and are throwing everything that will stick into this chapter; returning legacy characters, a change in final girls, and Williamson himself taking the helm. If anything, each update to this project is keeping fans wanting more. We imagine the first trailer will break viewership records.

The final product will be the ultimate assessment when it opens on February, 27 of next year.
