This year’s SXSW film festival is loaded with horror bangers at least according to critics. we have seen huge accolades for the haunted house movie Good Boy and the slasher Clown in a Cornfield.
On March 9 and 10 they watched a screening of the movie Drop and have already rang its praises online.
In the film, White Lotus star Meghann Fahy plays Violet, “a widowed mother on her first date in years, who arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry (It Ends with Us’ Brandon Sklenar) is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.
She’s instructed to tell nobody and follow instructions or the hooded figure she sees on her home security cameras will kill Violet’s young son and babysitting sister. Violet must do exactly as directed or everyone she loves will die. Her unseen tormentor’s final directive? Kill Henry.”
Crossing romance with horror seems to becoming a popular sub-genre. This year we saw it with Heart Eyes which is already the number one domestic horror grosser of 2025.
So what did SXSW critics think of Drop? Take a look:
Katie Rife at IGN Movies said: “A tightly plotted and unpretentious thrill ride. By concentrating on suspense (with only a light sprinkling of snark), Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon successfully pulls off the techno-paranoiac premise.”
Siddhant Adlakha of Variety: “A silly, pulpy mystery entirely sure of its own conceit, “Drop” combines tech paranoia and the looming specter of abuse to create something surprisingly taut and entertaining.”
JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray said: “A slam-bang thriller with a welcome dose of romance.”
But there was one critic, The Wrap’s Chase Hutchinson, who thought the film lacked substance, “It may be just slick enough in small slivers to win some over, but audiences should raise their standards for what they get out of this date.”
Overall though, Drop was well-received and you can see it for yourself when it releases in theaters on April 11.
