We aren’t even a full month into 2025 and there are still movies from last year to catch up on. 2024 was a great time for the genre, with one movie, The Substance, generating Oscar buzz. Demi Moore already took home a Golden Globe for her performance.
The below films are probably not award-worthy like that, but they are still great, and we understand if you missed them. Both films were not talked about enough and there wasn’t any publicity for them so they probably weren’t on your radar. The movies below can be found on whichever digital rental service you use. We recommend JustWatch to aid in your search.
The first film is directed by an up-and-coming horror director named Lowell Dean. He made Wolfcop back in 2014 and his upcoming wrestling horror movie, Dark Match (Jan. 31), is already getting noticed. Die Alone, “tells the story of a young man who has amnesia. He bands together with a rugged survivalist in a zombie-like outbreak to find his girlfriend.” It stars Douglas Smith and Carrie-Anne Moss.
The next film is even more obscure than Die Alone, perhaps because it’s a British release. It’s called Broken Bird and it may be a little slow to start, but trust us, it gets twisted and shocking once it gains momentum.
“The film adapts the award-winning short Sybil into a harrowing tale of loneliness, obsession, and dark desires. Sybil, a quiet and creative soul, finds solace in her work at a funeral parlor and her unusual hobbies—taxidermy and poetry. But as the lines between reality and imagination blur, her fascination with the dead spirals into a horrific climax that will leave you breathless.”
These are just two of the films you may have missed in 2024 and are worth visiting. If you did watch these, congratulations, you’re really on your horror game and we applaud your dedication to the genre. Let us, and others, know what you thought of these movies in the comments.
