“Eyes Of A Monster”

Frankenstein’s Monster had been thought dead, until a girl was found floating lifeless in the nearby lake. When the father used the word “giant” in an inconsolable voice, Henry, Professor Waldman, and Elizabeth knew the abomination was still alive. The boy named Paul, whose father’s hands had been stitched onto the experiment, knew the true nature of the beast.

It was but a child, learning to live again in a world made of cruelty and bigotry the likes his previous souls only knew. The boy knew the monster was doomed to a quick death even if it did not. All Paul could do was try and help steer the accused away from the mob as long as he could…

Reviewer Notes

Wow, what a letdown this miniseries was over all. We didn’t get the classic Frankenstein story written by Mary Shelley, but the edited script version that was developed for the 1931 Universal Studios film with Michael Walsh’s body parts origin angle thrown in as if it would breathe new life into the story. To be honest, with the limited number of pages in each comic book, and the number of issues allotted, why bother with this experiment?

Yes, it would be an interesting plot if Walsh had the pages of a full novel to work with. But in comic book format his expansion was pointless. As far as this issue is concerned, there was very little content for the money. We as readers are also left wondering what this whole thing even meant. The ending was just lazy writing, in my opinion. If it were not for the artwork, I would give issue #4 a one-star rating. Lucky for Michael Walsh, I did admire his artwork, and production by Image Comics was their standard fare. So, I’m willing to give this issue two out of five stars. For a series as a whole, again, two stars is it for me.
