You know what you need after a month of overspending? More spending! And there might be no better place to show off your best Elon Musk bank account flex than in Orlando at the little retail shop of horrors known as Atomic Horror.
From the looks of it, this space is more of an experience than a cash grab. Filled with life-size dioramas featuring Jason, an interactive media display celebrating They Live, and even a practical Ghoulie emerging from a toilet, Atomic Horror offers pretty much everything a horror movie collector would want to buy and see, all in a strip mall about 30 minutes away from the Universal theme park in Florida.
The shop opened about two years ago and has already become a hot spot for shoppers and tourists. But we find it hard to believe that the term “just browsing” applies here because around every corner is something more interesting than the one before.
Atomic Horror also has an online retail space. So if you can’t get to the Sunshine State personally, your Google browser can act as a travel agent. iHorror is not sponsored or affiliated with Atomic Horror, but we probably wouldn’t decline their ad dollars if they asked.
Run by only three people, Atomic Horror is beaming with passion for the genre. Watch any video tour of the shop (we included one below) and you can see why. It was the brainchild of Bryan Murphy, A University of Central Florida graduate who left his job in politics to pursue his passion for something less horrific. He and his brother Jason collaborated and the retail dream was born.
“There’s so much merch constantly coming out and no problem getting stock,” Bryan said in a 2022 interview. “But I wanted to do something very craft- it’s not all major franchises, there’s Jason (Voorhees) and then there’s They Live and the Cheddar Goblin.”
Blending really cool buyable merch with well-crafted social media photo ops, Atomic Horror should be a template for other budding retailers who want to serve a niche community that rarely goes beyond their zip codes unless it’s for a genre convention.
“Our shop is a true horror fan’s paradise, and we guarantee that you’ll never forget your visit. Come indulge in all things spooky and terrifying! Your nightmares are about to come true at Atomic Horror.”
Atomic Horror is located at 4805 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL, United States. It’s open Wed. through Sun. from 11 am-7 pm: (407) 243-8136
