Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite contemporary directors. And Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors. So, it’s an absolute pleasure to see QT spreading the love about a Nic Cage film. And that’s exactly what I’m here to talk about today. Three cheers for that!
Quentin Tarantino calls this Nic Cage film one of his favorites of the past five years.
On a recent episode of the Video Archives Podcast, Tarantino spoke to his fondness for the tragically underrated Nicolas Cage film Pig. “In watching some of the Nic Cage stuff, the one that blew me away was that movie he did, Pig.”
Tarantino continued, “That’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in the last five years. He deserves to be proud of it… that guy who directed it [Michael Sarnoski] did a killer job. He did a really, really terrific job.”
In Pig, Nicolas Cage plays a truffle hunter living alone in the Oregon wilderness with no one but his beloved pig. But when that pig is stolen, Cage travels to Portland to find her.
A Delightful Feast Of Talented Actors
The flick is definitely a great showcase for Cage. It allows him to show a level of emotional depth we don’t always get to see from the beloved actor. In fact, many critics were surprised he didn’t receive an Oscar nod for his textured portrayal. But it’s not really a surprise considering the Academy’s relationship to genre cinema.
In addition to Cage, Alex Wolff, Adam Arkin, Nina Belforte, and Gretchen Corbett star in the film. Michael Sarnoski wrote the screenplay in addition to sitting at the helm. Neon distributed Pig, giving it a limited release where it grossed nearly $4 million dollars against an estimated budget of $3 million.
If Tarantino’s seal of approval has you keen to experience Pig, we’ve got you covered. You can find the film streaming on Hulu as of the publication of this post.
