“Challengers Of The Unknown – Part 01”

Darkseid had been stopped by the Justice League, but in his defeat the would-be conqueror exploded into a powerful energy wave. This event would come to affect everything in a radius out as far as the Kuiper belt. Now, Mister Terrific has assembled every superhero, metahuman, and god-like being available to deal with the aftermath. This includes the Challengers of the Unknown.

Strange anomalies have formed across Earth’s star system. The Challengers have been tasked with leading teams to investigate these, including the one at the bottom of the North Atlantic, a disturbance on Dinosaur Island, a titanic geode on the red planet of Mars, and an infected asteroid hurtling towards Earth. Will the Challengers be able to unravel the mystery? Only time will tell.

Reviewer Notes

The last iteration of the Challengers I followed was Volume 03 (1997-1998), which featured all new members and a support cast of then-aged versions of the original characters. Sometime after 1998, the original group returned to their youthful appearance and adventuring status. I loved the 1997 version of The Challengers of the Unknown, but both teams retained the same goals, that of investigating the paranormal! So when I saw Volume 05 hit the shelves, I had to check it out.

I will admit up front that I don’t read any of the primary DC books, so I’m coming at this series with little knowledge of the events leading up to Darkseid’s defeat. From a writing and art perspective, I found issue #1 very entertaining. I will definitely have to do some research on some of the Justice League members. I have no clue who some of the characters are. With that said, if you are a Challengers fan, you should enjoy this miniseries. I give this issue four out of five stars.
