Most laptops with enough power to be worth your time have spinning fans to keep them cool. The days of laptop fans may be coming to an end, though. Ventiva has launched its ICE9 thermal management suite which is made to improve cooling for laptops without any spinning blades. This new solution give give users a silent, fan-less cooling experience specifically for powerful ultra-thin laptops.

ICE9 is a cooling technology that does not have moving parts, so it operates quietly and without vibrations, and ,therefore, produces no noise. ICE9 works by using ionized air molecules in an electric field to create airflow, the company claims.

Right now, the ICE9 system can support laptops with a thermal design power (TDP) of up to 25W, and there are plans to cool laptops with up to 40W TDP by 2027. ICE9 is based on Ventiva’s patented Ionic Cooling Engine (ICE) technology, which uses the power of a minuscule plasma field to generate air movement. This eliminates the need for mechanical fans and provides “solid-state” cooling.

The best part about it is the ICE9’s compact size, which enables slim laptop designs and lets OEMs to integrate additional features. It can also provide cooling controlled by software, based on system needs.

Frore Systems also has a similar technology called AirJet Mini Slim. This solid-state active cooling chip is just 2.5 mm thick and weighs only 8 grams, but it has lower cooling capacity than Ventiva’s solution. Each chip can dissipate up to 5.25W of heat while consuming only 1W of power. It also has a self-cleaning function and Thermoception, which lets it sense its own temperature and adjust performance accordingly.

Our ICE technology is transforming the electronics market, enabling a new wave of silent, intelligent heat-transferring thermal management solutions, and our latest results underscore the remarkable scalability of our ICE9 solution. Initially demonstrated within the ‘thin and light’ category of laptops at around 15W TDP, the ICE9 device now enables laptop manufacturers to extend these benefits to higher performance systems, paving the way for the launch of entire product families of silent computing products.

-Carl Schlachte, CEO of Ventiva.

Any effort to eliminate moving parts will get the attention of laptop manufacturers. Fans are one of the most commonly broken components, and their inclusion makes laptops bulkier. Both ICE9 and AirJet Mini Slim could change the laptop market by delivering quiet and slim cooling devices, but it will take a few years until these systems can compete with a fan for more powerful machines.
