A movie based off Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series of games has been scrapped a decade on from its initial reveal, according to comments from producer Basil Iwanyk.
The Ubisoft flagship series tells the tale of Sam Fisher, an operative of the fictional NSA divison “Third Echelon” as he takes on criminals and terrorists to protect the homeland.
The movie was to star Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Venom) as Fisher, and was to be directed by Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow).
But according to The Direct, Iwanyk confirmed that the movie was no longer happening due to issues with the budget and the script:
“That movie would have been awesome… Just couldn’t get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That’s one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”
Despite this setback, Splinter Cell fans can still look forward to Splinter Cell Deathwatch, a Netflix anime based on the series that is currently in production and is scheduled for a 2025 release.
