The helpful folks at Rotten Tomatoes have revolutionized the way we watch movies. Instead of scouring reviews from numerous publications to get an idea of how critics felt about a particular picture, the site aggregates a critical consensus, providing a streamlined experience for movie lovers. Heck yes to convenient innovations like Netflix.

In addition to forever changing the face of film criticism, Rotten Tomatoes is also responsible for compiling a series of lists ranking the noteworthy output of specific film genres. Of particular interest to our audience, the site has compiled a ranking of the highest-rated horror films of all time based on critical reception. Topping that list of 200 exceptional efforts is Steven Spielberg’s epic tale of aquatic terror Jaws.

Where can I watch Jaws?

If you have designs on watching the highest-rated horror film of all time, all you need is a Netflix subscription. That’s right, Jaws is available to stream on Netflix as of the publication of this post.

In addition to the honorable distinction of being named the best horror picture ever released, Jaws is also widely regarded as the first summer blockbuster. Moreover, the film terrified an entire generation and even led to sharks getting an undeservedly bad reputation.

Interestingly enough, Spielberg wasn’t Universal’s first choice to direct the picture. The studio reportedly met with at least two other filmmakers before inking a deal with 26-year-old Spielberg. It’s hard to imagine what the film would have been like with a different creator at the helm. Fortunately, we don’t have to.

The setup for this Netflix-streaming aquatic terror flick goes like this:

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

That’s all we’ve got for you for the time being. Stay tuned to the site for future updates on which noteworthy films in the genre space are available to stream and where you can find them. Also, don’t forget to follow @DreadCentral on the social media platform previously known as Twitter (now sadly and inexplicably just known as X) so you never miss out on one of our happening updates.
