Diamond Select Toys brought a smaller than usual assemblage of new Marvel collectibles to New York Comic Con 2024, so I was a mite worried we wouldn’t get a good round of DST solicitations this month. Luckily, that’s not the case, as we’re getting a highly-demanded movie Select figure, two new shots at animated busts of top villains and a reissue of a store exclusive: Marvel Select Deadpool vs Wolverine Wolverine, Carnage X and busts of Green Goblin and unhelmeted Magneto are now up for order!
At a glance, it wasn’t readily apparent to me what new Marvel items Diamond Select Toys had brought to NYCC 2024 last week. The only things that particularly caught my attention were the X-Men Animated Magneto bust variant without helmet and the previously cancelled Spider-Man Animated Green Goblin bust.
During their Saturday panel, DST also debuted concept designs of a Marvel Select Wolverine figure from Deadpool vs Wolverine, which immediately drew a lot of attention. That figure, plus the two aforementioned mini busts, make up 3/4 of the new DST Marvel solicits for October 2024.
The biggest surprise of this month’s pre-orders for me was definitely the resolicited Green Goblin animated bust based on the 90s Spider-Man TAS. This first went up for order in November 2022, but went on to be the only one of Diamond’s 90s animated busts I can ever remember being cancelled. With the success of every other mini bust in the Spider-Man and X-Men lines, I always wondered if Norman might get revisited for another chance, and now the day is here.
The Green Goblin bust looks unchanged from the 2022 prototype, so I don’t really have much fresh to say about it. I liked it way back then, and I still find its bright colors and personality rich portrait to be eye-grabbers. Now that the Spidey line of busts is better established, I think this villain will fare much better sales-wise.
The other animated bust is a first for the X-Men busts line: a variant. Previously, the wholly different Jean Grey and Phoenix busts were the only time one character was represented twice in the lineup, but now we’ll be getting a more straightforward variant with unhelmeted Magneto.
As Magneto is the most famous and popular X-Men villain by miles, it’s not a shocker that his original 2020 bust sold through its limited edition size of 3000 pieces.
With renewed interest in the iconic character after his prominence in X-Men 97, I’m happy to see Magnus return with his helmet off for fans who still needed a Magneto in their display. The bust otherwise appears identical to me, but Magneto appears so frequently with his helmet off in the media that I think this will be a very appealing mini bust to many fans. I wonder how long it will be until we see a Wolverine variant like unmasked Logan now?
On the Marvel Select front, we get our first new movie Marvel Select figure in years with a Wolverine from the insanely popular Deadpool & Wolverine movie. We haven’t had a new Select figure in a few months, which is probably because DST was hard at work on this Logan.
For those who missed the Disney Store release of this one, it’s more or less the usual Marvel Select Carnage figure, but with cool new heads and a neat interchangeable elongated neck.
I think this is actually the better version of Carnage Select with the most fun display options, so I’m happy to see it get a wider release.
All of these figures and busts are now up for order while they last (I could absolutely see that movie Wolverine Select figure selling out expediently).
