If you are going to make a top 100 list of the best horror movies of all time, you’re going to get clapback, that’s just the nature of the business. Variety has been in it for almost 120 years. The entertainment business that it is. When you hear the term “the trades” as it pertains to entertainment, publications like Variety are what they mean.

So when they decide to do a top 10 list of any genre, you would expect their team of experts to get it right. Of course, horror is subjective; their top tier is different than someone else’s, but generally where the films land on the list is, at least, are in the right vicinity. Understanding that, Variety got it mostly right. Right?

Their top critics, and writers: Siddhant Adlakha, Peter Debruge, William Earl, Owen Gleiberman, Courtney Howard, Tomris Laffly, Amy Nicholson, and Rene Rodriguez compiled the list and to say that their job was challenging is an understatement.

As usual, the ultimate critics, social media, had plenty to say about their choices and they weren’t afraid to speak. We aren’t going to spoil it (read it HERE), we will let the court of public opinion do it for you as horror fans have some criticisms of their own regarding the list where divisiveness comes standard in the comments section. We’ll just say it was harder to find positive feedback amid the voices of disappointment.

Choice Words From Instagram:

“When I saw possession so low on the list I lost faith. Then I saw Get Out so high, then king Kong and so on. Such a bad list…” — cuervodp

“Where are Saw, Cure, Martyrs and The Others? — ikol96

From X:

“Human Centipede 2, Hostel 2, and Salo are all here, but you neglect gems like Fright Night, Hellraiser, The Lighthouse, The Lost Boys, Talk to Me, House, Suspiria 2018, Hush, Sleepaway Camp, Martyrs, The Mist, Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978?” — Boo! I’m Harker

“i know y’all put human centipede 2 on this list for rage bait but this list still sucks” — Bri

“nightmare on elm street at 74 is CRAZY” — Dump
