The latest trailer for the upcoming sequel Smile 2 includes a shining example of a Hollywood legend’s offspring taking up the family business. Introducing Ray Nicholson, Jack’s 32-year-old son who shares a toothy resemblance to his father.
Ray has been in some great indie films since his debut in 2006’s The Benchwarmers, including Emerald Fennell‘s Promising Young Woman in 2020, but Smile 2 may be the first time that audiences realize who his famous dad is, especially if they are fans of The Shining, in which the older Nicholson played Jack Torrence, the abusive, possessed caretaker of the snowbound Overlook Hotel hellbent on murdering his terrified wife and son.
Jack Nicholson sported a similar smile in The Shining (1980) and we are loving Paramount’s callback to that visage in Smile 2. Of course, Ray is a great actor in his own right, but his willingness to embody his father’s evil grin is a wonderful gift to the genre.
Early reports of Smile 2 have been mostly positive, with some saying it is better than the original.
“It’s a stellar horror entry and, slight faults aside, it’s an exemplary horror sequel that hits home runs where the original landed base runs.” — Jeff Ewing, Collider.
Smile 2 opens in theaters this weekend.
