Cuckoo is looking at a $3+ million opening, not a Longlegs debut ($22 million) but on target for Neon’s Alpine-set horror starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens.

R-rated Cuckoo by Tilman Singer opened at 1,503 theaters for 9th place at the domestic box office. Schafer is great as troubled 17-year-old Gretchen, who reluctantly leaves her American home after her mother dies to live with her father and his new family just as they move to a resort in the beautiful German Alps. Owner Herr König (Stevens, menacing fun) takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister, while Gretchen herself is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret

Longlegs by Osgood Perkins is no. 10 in week 5 with an estimated $2 million on 1,310 screens for a hefty $71 million gross. It’s sticking around amid a steadier stream of studio wide releases and tentpoles.

Holdovers: Didi from Focus Features and A24’s Sing Sing continue to attract audiences. Sean Wang’s Sundance winner (U.S. Dramatic Audience Award/U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast) expanded to 200 theaters in week 3 for an estimated $650k over the three days and a cume of $1.6 million. Sing Sing by Greg Kewdar starring Colman Domingo expanded to 39 screens for a nice $227k weekend and an $822k cume in week 5 in a slow rollout.

Sony Pictures Classics Kneecap by Rich Peppiatt, a pseudo-biopic about an the eponymous Irish rap trio playing themselves also held nicely with $103.4k on 204 screens for an estimated cume of nearly $820k in week 2.

Also starting its sophomore frame, Oscilloscope’s CatVideoFest 2024 by Will Braden grossed $102k on 55 screens for a cume of $482k.

New limited release: Good One, the first from Metrograph Pictures grossed $30k at three locations (the Metrograph and Film at Lincoln Center in New York, and the Landmark Sunset 5 in LA) with multiple sold-out shows. The directorial debut by India Donaldson stars newcomer Lily Collias. The reviews are great and the film will continue to expand into all major markets by early September.
