“Chapter Four”

They survived! Red Sonja, Luna the witch, and two out of the three pilgrims trapped by the suffocating sandstorm, defeated the monsters which sprung up from the dunes to feast upon human flesh. But, as Lucas prepared to bury his companion Polly, Luna took it upon herself to scout the area for any clues to the hidden valley.

That’s when the old man struck! With Sonja and Lucas distracted by other tasks, Grimore attacks the witch from behind, sending the sorceress tumbling into a nearby ravine below. As the woman’s screams faded into the depths below, the old man turned and began walking back to the makeshift camp Sonja had begun cobbling together.

Will Grimore be able to convince the others of his innocence as they search for Luna’s body? What are the old man’s ulterior motives? Just how many marauders occupy this area, anyway? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Not as bad as issue three, but pretty darn close. If you purchased book four in the “Empire Of The Damned” series looking for compelling entertainment, you will not be satisfied with this bare-minimum approach to comic book writing. Like the previous issue, writer Steve Niles leans on the artist pretty heavily to pad this issue with more oversize panels and single page spreads.

The cover art is great, but that doesn’t make up for what’s going on inside the book. I can’t at this point, with a clear conscience, recommend “Red Sonja: Empire of the Damned” to anyone. I’m giving this issue two out of five stars. Please Dynamite, why do you forsake us so?
