Hideo Kojima

Video game designer Hideo Kojima is probably the coolest guy in the world. His Twitter account especially is full of remarkable insights, niche interests, and odes to Dario Argento’s Opera. While horror fans are still reeling from the death of P.T. (seriously, it’s one of the great generational tragedies), Hideo Kojima remains committed to the genre, regularly spotlighting the movies and games he’s been playing. 2024 has been an exceptional year for horror, and here, we’ll be spotlighting the genre movies and shows Hideo Kojima has personally loved and where to stream them:

True Detective: Night Country (Max)

True Detective: Night Country is the best entry in the series since the first. Issa López’s horror show is remarkably tense, beautifully acted, and gorgeously atmospheric. You can stream it now on Max with the added bonus of knowing it got Hideo Kojima’s thumbs up.

All of Us Strangers  (Hulu)

While All of Us Strangers got a limited release stateside in 2023, the movie didn’t release wide until 2024. Andrew Haigh’s supernatural drama is part ghost story, part love story, all heartbreaking. Hideo Kojima sobbed. So did I.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Max)

It’s big kaiju beating up other big kaiju. What else do you want? Sure, it’s a little harder to stomach after last year’s Godzilla Minus One, but Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is still some of the most fun you can with a movie this year. Hideo Kojima even found it pretty touching.

Fake Documentary Q (YouTube)

Fake Documentary Q is terrifying. If you’re a J-horror or found footage nut, the channel is a must-watch. It’s hard to describe, but the mini vignettes are replete with some of the most frightening horror imagery of the century.

Under Paris (Netflix)

Under Paris was goofy and great. It doesn’t reinvent the shark attack wheel so much as it leans into its innate excess. Absurd, gory, and a ton of fun, it’s no wonder Hideo Kojima (maybe) liked it? Honestly, it’s hard to tell. I liked it, at least.

Twilight

I just think it’s interesting that Hideo Kojima incited another wave of Team Jacob versus Team Edward with this tweet. See what I mean? He’s a cool guy.

What do you think? What have been some of your favorite watches of the year? Any of Hideo Kojima’s favorites make your list? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
