Guillermo del Toro is an undisputed cinematic master. The Oscar-winning director has demonstrated a command for filmmaking that puts him in league with the all-time greats. So, whenever we come across a new suggestion from the director, you know we’re all ears.

A few years back, del Toro partnered with the fine folks at Criterion to spotlight a handful of titles within the collection that he loves. Among his top picks is Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face.

The decorated director had the following to say about Eyes Without a Face: “[The main character is] like an undead Audrey Hepburn. It influenced me a lot with the contrast between beauty and brutality.”

If I’m being honest, he had me at ‘undead Audrey Hepburn’. If you have yet to see Eyes Without a Face and are keen to give the film a look for yourself, you can find the picture streaming on Max as of the publication of this post.

Eyes Without a Face stars Pierre Brasseur, Edith Scob, Alida Valli, Juliette Mayniel, Alexandre Rignault, and Béatrice Altariba.

The setup is as follows:

Dr. Génessier (Brasseur) is riddled with guilt after an accident that he caused disfigures the face of his daughter, the once beautiful Christiane (Scob), who outsiders believe is dead. Dr. Génessier, along with accomplice and laboratory assistant Louise (Valli), kidnaps young women and brings them to the Génessier mansion. After rendering his victims unconscious, Dr. Génessier removes their faces and attempts to graft them onto Christiane’s.

That’s all we’ve got for the time being. Stay tuned to the site for more recommendations from the masters as we learn them. And be sure to follow @DreadCentral on Twitter so you never miss an update.
