It’s no secret that Quentin Tarantino marches to the beat of his own drum. The Oscar-winning director has mad love for the grindhouse sleaze of the ‘70s. Yet he sees little merit in Hitchcock’s cinematic output. So, it’s not entirely surprising that he has no time for a series that captivated critics and fans alike with its beloved inaugural season. I’m talking about True Detective.

Tarantino spoke with Vulture a while back and revealed that he gave the series’ widely celebrated first season a shot but didn’t connect with the material. “I tried to watch the first episode of season one, and I didn’t get into it at all,” Tarantino admitted. “I thought it was really boring. And season two looks awful. Just the trailer — all these handsome actors trying to not be handsome and walking around looking like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s so serious, and they’re so tortured, trying to look miserable with their mustaches and grungy clothes.”

The first season of True Detective stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles. Nic Pizzolatto created the series for HBO. All seasons are now streaming on Max.

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, the setup goes like this: Follows the lives of police detectives as they chase criminals, using unconventional methods. The officers struggle to gain control of their own personal demons as they attack different cases.
