Who would’ve thought a queer-coded thriller from the director of Bridesmaids would be shattering expectations and holding strong to its high spot on the Netflix charts? Paul Feig’s 2018 film A Simple Favor surprised viewers when it first hit theaters, and now that it’s recently come to the massive streamer, that surprise is hitting all over again.

A Simple Favor follows a single mom and mommy blogger Stephanie who becomes friends with Emily. They develop a charged yet thrilling friendship, full of impeccable suits and angular architecture. But one day, Emily asks for a small favor then vanishes. Stephanie teams up with Emily’s husband to try and solve the mystery behind Emily’s disappearance. But it is a long and twisty road toward answers.

Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively star as Stephanie and Emily, respectively. Kendrick brings a bubbly innocence to Stephanie while Lively imbues Emily with masculine sex appeal who isn’t afraid to be femme. That dynamic alone is a feast for the eyes, as Stephanie fawns over a well-dressed Emily in a gangster-style fedora and tailored suit.

Henry Golding also stars as Emily’s husband. Linda Cardellini, Andrew Rannells, and Dustin Mulligan round out the cast.

Recently, it was announced that the sequel, aptly titled A Simple Favor 2 has wrapped filming in Italy and is slated to premiere on Prime Video in 2025. According to People, the film will feature the “return of Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman.”

While a sequel typically means big success (the film did make nearly $100 million at the box office in the U.S.), A Simple Favor has still flown under the radar. Feig even told Variety in a recent interview about the film topping Netflix charts, “It makes me so happy because this really is one of my favorite movies. It’s done well in the theaters, but I always feel so many people haven’t seen it yet so now they do get to see it.”

Now the film has found a second life on Netflix and viewers just can’t get enough.
