The Coffee Table

Recently, everyone on my Twitter timeline was talking about this movie called The Coffee Table. I’d never heard of it, but my peers who had were gleefully sharing how excited they were for it to mess—certifiably, intensely mess—everyone up once they were given a chance to see it. Naturally, because I’m a sadist and like it when movies rattle me to my core, I sought it out. Presently, the movie is available to buy on Prime Video On Demand for $8.99, though Second Sight Films recently announced their intention to release the film on digital platforms on May 20. Brace yourself, because this viral hit is one you won’t soon forget.

Per Prime Video:

Unspeakable horror meets the blackest of black comedy. To celebrate the birth of their baby, a bickering couple buys a coffee table. Guaranteed to bring happiness to their family by the smarmy salesman, the couple instead find nothing but horror with this furniture and all without ghosts, monsters or possessions, just a tacky coffee table.

It’s hard to talk about The Coffee Table without spoiling anything, and it really is a movie you should go into as blindly as possible. Try not to watch any trailers or read any reviews. Whether you choose to buy it now (like I did) or wait for the digital release next month, the less you know, the harder The Coffee Table is going to hit.

If you’re incorrigible and want to continue reading, I’ll do my best to keep things as spoiler-free as possible. In our review out of last year’s Fantastic Fest, Mary Beth McAndrews wrote, “The Coffee Table is feel-bad cinema at its finest, an anxiety-shredding experience that isn’t afraid to make you laugh.” I did laugh, but I also squealed and averted my eyes. Regularly. The Coffee Table is tense. It’s gruesome. It’s horrifying. It’s incredible.

Don’t just take our word for it. The Coffee Table has been heating up on Twitter as the Biggest Thing since Twitter users argued about whether Alien was science fiction or horror.

Check out some gilded responses below (including my own):

Seriously, what are you waiting for? Go ruin your night and watch The Coffee Table. It’s nine dollars worth spending. Once you’ve had a chance to watch it, please, please let me know what you thought over on Twitter @Chadiscollins. We can be in pain together.
