News of people vomiting in a theater while watching a horror film is by no means a recent occurrence. Such visceral reactions have been reported on since The Exorcist, whose marketing was dominated by reports of people leaving the theater, passing out, and throwing up. For some, it may be a red flag to avoid said movie at all costs. But for others, like us horror fans, it’s the green light that a movie might have something special. And the latest to lean into vomit-based marketing is the upcoming slasher In A Violent Nature from director Chris Nash.
The movie, which is filmed from the killer’s perspective, was recently screened at the Chicago Film Festival. During that screening, an audience member supposedly lost their lunch. On top of that, someone secretly captured audio of the moment, which was posted on the Twitter account Film Updates.
While the moment in question hasn’t been revealed, Twitter users have speculated the moment of vomit (MOV as I’ve now coined it) is during a kill said to be one of the best of the year. That may explain the clapping, cheering, and groaning heard in that audio clip.
In an interview with Katie Rife for Dread Central, Nash spoke about the kill and explained that the weapons used in said scene are called drag hooks which “are used for wrapping around big logs”. He also playfully said that this kill scene is “a banana peel joke”. Take that however you wish.
In A Violent Nature is reportedly a slasher unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Plus, it was announced today that it was officially unrated, which means that the blood and guts are (hopefully) going to be off the charts.
The film’s official synopsis reads:
When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back—along with anyone in his way.
In his review of the film at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Dread Central’s Bill Bria wrote,
“In the landscape of high-concept, post-post-modern slashers we’re living through these days—everything from David Gordon Green’s take on Halloween to It’s a Wonderful Knife — it’s refreshing to receive what feels like a back-to-basics, genuinely spooky, delightfully gory slasher that nonetheless contains a great deal of meta-commentary all its own.”
Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, and Lauren Taylor star. in the film.
In A Violent Nature comes exclusively to theaters on May 31, 2024.
