Stephen King fans rejoice. A documentary celebrating the author’s storied career and creative output has landed. The picture is called Stephen King: A Necessary Evil and it features a collection of archival interviews, clips from various screen adaptations of King’s work, footage from book readings, and content from guest lectures. Additionally, the film aims to shed light on the prolific writer’s formative years and recalls his eventual rise to prominence.

The documentary premiered exclusively on Magellan TV in October 2022. But with the exclusivity window expired, the doc is now viewable on Tubi. I briefly scanned through the film, and while it doesn’t appear to feature any new interview footage, the collection of archival content appears extensive and exhaustive. Fans of the author will likely find plenty they haven’t seen before. What’s more, the documentary isn’t a substantial time commitment. It runs for less than an hour in total.

Stephen King: A Necessary Evil seems to have flown under the radar for most. I couldn’t even find the picture indexed on Rotten Tomatoes. However, with a total of more than 200 votes, the doc sits at a very respectable 7/10 from IMDb users.

Here is the official synopsis for Stephen King: A Necessary Evil: The US writer Stephen King (Portland, Maine, 1947) has been one of the world’s best-selling authors for decades. How can the overwhelming success of his numerous works be explained? Perhaps by the boundless inventiveness of his literature? And what else is behind the longevity of his astonishing career?
