Kulan Gath has escaped his spectral prison through the blind ignorance of Red Sonja. Now the hoary sorcerer directs his wrath upon three realm-keepers attempting to sway the dark magic he so covets. With the fall of Vestfold, Kulan commands his bewitched madmen south to the white stone walls of Nordal Fortress – the sanctuary of Dorian Runebinder.

Can three sorcerers unite against one who yields the powers of a demon known as Shuma-Gorath? Will Red Sonja survive the imminent slaughter of the Wild Hunt? What destiny awaits the child sister of the woman called grace? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

There is a lot going on in this issue of Red Sonja, and for the most part it was entertaining. Writer Torunn Gronbekk introduces elements of the Aesir and Vanir, a version of real world Scandinavians, who in this setting occupy the lands of Asgard in Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age. I think it’s nice to see some of the lesser known parts of Robert’s literary world on display, as it gives Hyboria more depth when tied to real world mythology.

This issue does suffer with some of the same key points I mentioned in previous reviews. It would be a blessing if Dynamite Entertainment would include even a simple map of where Red Sonja is currently inside the storyline. The Devil Is in the details, some would say. Is this all taking place inside the country of Nemedia, Hyrkania, or someplace else?

I was a little confused during the flashback section of this issue, as some of the characters returned but I don’t remember their names or their significance within the story itself. I had to go back and research some of my previous reviews for hints. I would suggest to Writer Torunn Gronbekk to at least mention the character’s names in the dialog if they haven’t been featured in a while. For new readers to Red Sonja Volume 07, i would suggest reading the books back to back as I think it would help maintain the character continuity. Just a thought.

I’m giving this issue a solid three out of five stars. I believe this chapter of Red Sonja’s adventures are coming to an end, but it appears Dynamite Entertainment already has a replacement. I’m looking forward to it and future issues of Savage Red Sonja. Until next time…
