Deliever Us on Hulu

It can be tough to keep up with the sheer volume of content out there right now. Every day, it seems a new series or movie is popping up somewhere. If you don’t catch it immediately, you risk losing it to the streaming ether, the point at which everyone has moved on to whatever the next, new, shiny thing is. Last week, Lee Roy Kunz and Cru Ennis’ Deliver Us charted on Hulu. If you haven’t had the chance to check out this religious shocker, I’d recommend it.

Per Hulu: According to an ancient prophecy, a woman will give birth to identical twin boys: one will be the Messiah, the other the Anti-Christ. When a Russian nun, Sister Yulia, claims to have immaculately conceived twins, the Vatican sends a team of priests to investigate. The priests are joined by affiliates of a secret society with orders to abort both children. However, an American Jesuit discovers their plan and helps her escape.

Critical reviews were stronger than faith-based horror fans might be expecting. While Deliver Us retreads a lot of the same ground—creepy nuns, evil priests—there’s style and gore to spare. It doesn’t quite exorcise the subgenre’s past demons out, but it effectively uses them, solidifying Deliver Us as one of 2023’s most underrated horror gems. In our review here, our own Mary Beth McAndrews remarked, “Ennis and Kunz do create some stunningly beautiful sequences of violence. They know how to craft the fear, that’s for sure, it’s just the scope of the story that needs to be reduced to truly execute their vision. That violence and the special effects take Deliver Us to another level as flesh is torn in the name of the Lord. While the brutality isn’t consistent, when it’s there, it hits hard and fast.”

Luckily, it’s found an audience online since its premiere on Hulu. Horror fans, more than most audiences, are willing to overlook a lot of sins so long as the movie is fun, maybe a little bloody. Deliver Us, well, delivers. Check out some choice reactions below:

While reactions are limited right now, and they’re decidedly mixed, there remains a chance Deliver Us can deliver on the promise of its premise and carve out an audience all its own.

What do you think? Have you caught Deliver Us on Hulu yet? How was the gore? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
