Do you like scary movies? It turns out that the cast of Scream VI does.

Protagonist Tara Carpenter gets introduced in Scream (2022) as a devoted fan of The Babadook just before a gruesome encounter with Ghostface, and it becomes a running gag throughout the film. Like her character, actress Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) also happens to be a horror fan, perhaps even more so than Tara. Ortega recently appeared on an episode of “Hot Ones,” where she gushed about her appreciation for the 1980 slasher Prom Night.

That slasher knowledge inspired a question when Bloody Disgusting spoke with Ortega and Melissa Barrera about Scream VI ahead of the theatrical release on March 10, 2023.

What slasher or horror movie would Ortega recommend to pair with Scream VI? Her answer was surprising.

I really don’t know that this works as a double feature, but I’ve been talking about that film, Deep Red,” Ortega tells us, “which is a ’70s, slasher, masked killer; you don’t know who it is. Epic deaths, disco music playing during the deaths. I think it’s just a good time and beautifully shot.”

Tara Carpenter might prefer The Babadook, but the actress portraying her can be counted among Dario Argento’s fans.

On that note, 1975’s Deep Red is currently streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered SCREAMBOX, so get over there and check it out while you wait for Scream VI this weekend!

See Ortega’s response, as well as Barrera sharing her excitement over Sam Carpenter’s layered arc this time around, in the video interview below.

In the brand new movie, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are both back behind the camera for the upcoming Scream VI from Paramount and Spyglass.
