Phase 4 of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) hasn’t exactly been every fan’s cup of tea. But one facet of the “Phase” that I found absolutely captivating was the final episode of Loki Season 1. And now, the ultimate antagonist of that Disney+ (and sort of the next several years of Marvel movies) makes his chilling presence known in toy form: Marvel Legends He-Who-Remains is now beginning to ship out! Is this timeless villain worthy of joining your action figure collection?
I do my best to go into MCU movies and shows spoiler-free, so I genuinely didn’t know what to expect going into the Loki Season 1 finale. What I definitely did not expect, though, was the legitimately terrifying He-Who-Remains, who brought the scariness of eating an apple to a new level.
The character is dead within the episode he debuts, but nevertheless, he left a more lasting impression on me than almost any new MCU character since before Endgame. And while this version of He-Who-Remains is dead, we’ll be seeing much more of Jonathan Majors in the MCU to come! And so, Hasbro has come out of the gate with Majors’ premiere figure, Marvel Legends He-Who-Remains.
Collectors will immediately note that as part of the Khonshu wave, He-Who-Remains is part of the inaugural Build-A-Figure series of plastic-free packaged Marvel Legends figures.
Fans instantly crapped all over these dollar store-looking boxes (proverbially), and I can’t help but worry Hasbro dreadfully miscalculated with this packaging and is badly going to damage the health of the line.
Marvel Legends He-Who-Remains comes in one crinkly paper bag in the cardboard box, with his accessories in another. It seems like a lot of paper is being wasted to circumvent plastic, but what do I know?
He-Who-Remains himself is a terrific action figure, built using a sizable amount of new tooling and with sharp paint apps and sturdy plastic/joints.
The actor likeness on the portrait is strong, and I also particularly like the sculpted details on his jacket and left hand.
For a guy who doesn’t do anything besides talk, eat an apple and die in the series he’s in, the He-Who-Remains Loki figure is actually quite poseable! In totality, the six inch figure features:
—Ball-Hinge Neck, Elbows and Shoulders
—Ball-Jointed Upper Torso
—Pin-less Double-Hinge Knees
—Swivel-Hinge Wrists
—Swivel Thighs
—Hinged Feet with Ankle Rockers
The lack of biceps swivels inhibits the arm flexibility, but I’m glad to give that up in exchange for the modern pin-less knee joints
And speaking of that apple—it’s included as the only “true” accessory here (I’m not counting the Khonshu BAF head/skull)! In fact, the apple fits beautifully snug in HWR’s left hand, instantly making the character more recognizable to casual Loki fans. Since there’s really nothing else reasonable that you’d expect with this toy, I’m just fine with the apple as a sole accessory.
Overall: Hasbro has gone above and beyond here with a character many fans may not find entirely essential to their collections. The Jonathan Majors likeness on the portrait is visible enough, the articulation is beyond what you need for a character of this sort, the new tooling is greatly appreciated, the apple is the legit quintessential accessory and the quality is all-around great. While He Who Remains isn’t a character I was screaming for a super-articulated 6” figure of, there’s no doubt he’s been rendered excellently here by Hasbro. If you’re into this character, this is an outstanding $25 toy of him.
