It’s been over two years since I last attended a convention, but some things never change—including Diamond Select Toys being one of my first and most-anticipated booths to visit at any event I attend. And just like old times, there was plenty of goodness to be found at NYCC 2022 Diamond Select Toys booth—including upcoming statues of Apocalypse and Invisible Woman from their Marvel Premier Collection and Gallery lineup!
As I approached the DST booth at NYCC 2022, my (half-blind) eyes were immediately drawn to a duo of resin Marvel Premier Collection statues I’d never seen in person before: Apocalypse and the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm)!
En Sabah Nur is a popular guy this year, with new figures on the way from the Marvel Select and Marvel Legends series, and even a Skottie Young Animated statue on store shelves. But it’s been years since we saw a big resin Apocalypse statue, and DST clearly felt the time was now to add this legendary X-Men villain to their Marvel Premier Collection statue series.
The big A debuted at SDCC 2022, but was somewhat overshadowed there by his own Select figure and the multitude of other new Marvel statues displayed at the event. Luckily, I got to see ::A:: (as he likes to be called in comics written by Tini Howard)up close and personal over the weekend at the 2022 NYCC.
The statue features Apocalypse in his most iconic costume, brandishing his legendary sword, Scarab, which debuted a couple years ago in the X of Swords comic book story. As a huge fan of the Jonathan Hickman House of X era of comic books, I feel a little giddy to see something from those comics in statue form.
Even so, the costume doesn’t feel right for holding the sword, which is a bit of a bummer (although I don’t know how many fans (besides me) would be keen for a full-on XoS-specific Apocalypse statue).
Standing alongside ::A:: was a statue that I don’t believe has ever been shown publicly before: Marvel Premier Collection Invisible Woman (who was labeled as “Sue Storm” and not a superhero name).
This is a rare high-end merchandise release for Invisible Woman, who hasn’t had a statue released since the glory days of Bowen Designs. With DST’s recent releases of the Thing and Human Torch as well, it seems like only a matter of time until Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) joins the party with a new statue of his own as well.
Female faces on resin statues are not DST’s specialty, but I like the mature and determined look on Sue’s face, as well as the invisible platform and bubbles that she’s generating. Invisible Girl can be a tough character to capture in statue form, but I’m really happy with what Diamond Select Toys has done here.
These Marvel Premier Collection statues should go up for order soon, and are expected to release in 2023. The Thing is already in stores now, with Human Torch also beginning to arrive.
What do you think of this pair of upcoming Premier Collection statues, Marvel collectors? Will you be building the Fantastic Four in statue form, or adding the Darwinist mutant to your collection?
