An adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Ex Machina) and Cliff Chiang‘s (Wonder Woman, Human Target) best-selling, Eisner-winning comic series, which ran from 2015 to 2019, Prime Video’s “Paper Girls” just debuted this summer, and it has already been cancelled.

Deadline reports, “The decision comes a little over a month after all eight episodes from Season 1 were released July 29 to a strong response by critics, earning 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, which was soon joined by an equally impressive 88% audience score.”

The site also notes, “According to sources, Legendary TV will be shopping the series, looking to tap into the popularity of series like to Euphoria and Sex Lives of College Girl by offering another show with three-dimensional young female characters at the center.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis for “Paper Girls”…

“In the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, four paper girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ—are out on their delivery route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, these girls must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves.

“While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by a militant faction of time-travelers known as the Old Watch, who have outlawed time travel so that they can stay in power. In order to survive, the girls will need to overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, and themselves.”

The series stars Camryn Jones (“Tiffany Quilkin”), Riley Lai Nelet (“Erin Tieng”), Sofia Rosinsky (“Mac Coyle”), and Fina Strazza (“KJ Brandman”). Ali Wong also stars as the grown-up version of “Erin,” with Nate Corddry as “Larry” and Adina Porter as “Prioress.”

The adaptation is produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, in association with Plan B. Stephany FolsomChristopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers serve as executive producers, with Folsom and Rogers co-showrunning the series.
