Dreamscape – Freevee, Plex, Roku, Shout TV, Tubi
Co-written by A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warrior’s Chuck Russell and directed by The Stepfather’s Joseph Ruben, this sci-fi adventure tale embraces horror in a big way. Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) is a psychic for hire enlisted for government research to enter others’ dreams. Alex gets entangled in government conspiracy when his dream walking uncovers an assassination plot. Dreamscape frequently leans into horror thanks to recurring nightmares, from apocalyptic dystopias to a nightmarish snake-man.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space – HBO Max
In terms of feel-good horror, it’s hard to beat the insanely fun and loveable Killer Klowns from Outer Space. The Chiodo brothers’ production follows a town under siege by clown-like aliens from space. These Killer Klowns set about transforming the locals into cotton candy cocoons so they can slurp them down through straws. Any conceivable clown tactic gets transformed into a horrific weapon or bait to lure in human prey. Throw in an earworm score, and you’ve got a fun popcorn crowd-pleaser.
Predator – Hulu
With Prey heading to Hulu in under two months, now’s the perfect time to revisit this action sci-fi horror mashup. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Dutch, a special ops leader sent into the jungle on a rescue mission with his elite team. Shortly after realizing there’s more than meets the eye about their assignment, the highly trained team discovers they’re being hunted by something far more dangerous and not of this Earth. Iconic one liners, gory deaths, a great cast, and one unforgettable creature design make this one an endlessly entertaining classic. It also happens to be celebrating it’s 35th anniversary this year.
Prince of Darkness – Starz
In John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, science and religion collide. It’s the second film in Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy, sandwiched between The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. This time, it’s Satan and his father, the Anti-God, that threaten to destroy all of humanity. When most horror movies involving the devil take the possession approach, Carpenter uses it as a launching point for a demonic siege with the end goal of summoning the Anti-God to usher in the apocalypse. And Satan is swirling green liquid.
The Host – Plex, Pluto TV, Tubi
Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, Parasite) is a master of blending genres and tone, and his epic creature feature offers a perfect example. Deftly wrapping up the family drama, dysfunctional humor, and political satire in one thrilling creature feature bow, the plot sees a monster from Seoul’s Han River wreak havoc. When a young girl is snatched up by the beast, the girl’s family bands together to get her back by any means necessary. This big-budget spectacle will make you laugh one minute and cry the next.
