It’s another big week for the horror genre, with a whopping 11 brand new horror movies headed our way. And once again, they’re all originals – no remakes, no sequels, no reboots!
This week’s most hotly anticipated release is Ti West‘s X, which is playing only in theaters this weekend courtesy of A24. But that’s only the beginning of this week’s new offerings.
Here’s all the new horror releasing March 15-20, 2022!
First up, Well Go USA heads into deep space with Project Gemini, a new sci-fi/horror movie that was just released on Digital and Blu-ray here in the States today.
In the Russian horror movie, “After centuries of destroying Earth’s resources, humankind faces the grim reality that its last shot at survival may require creating an entirely new home—in outer space. An international expedition is quickly formed to find a suitable new planet, but when plans go awry, the crew is suddenly stranded without power on a strange planet. Unfortunately, they’ll soon learn that something truly unimaginable has been out there watching, lying in wait for the unwary human scouts.”
“Featuring stunning CGI & VFX,” the first feature film from Director Serik Beyseu stars Moscow International Film Festival “Spirit of Fire” award winner Egor Koreshkov (Dostoevskiy), Alyona Konstantinova (Involution), Dmitriy Frid (The Balkan Line, Heroes and Cowards), Nikita Dyuvbanov (Superdeep, Beyond the Edge), Lisa Martinez, Kostya Samoukov, Viktor Potapeshkin (Let’s Name Her Lisa), and Petr Romanov (I Am Dragon, Lovi Moment).
Also out today, Mutiny Pictures has released the Winter-set horror movie Cold Wind Blowing on DVD and Digital, written and directed by Dionne Copland.
In Cold Wind Blowing, “A brother and sister and their four friends go on Christmas vacation in the Cypress Hills. As old hurts begin to surface between the intimate circle of friends, a shocking event further illuminates their fracturing relationships.”
M.J. Kehler, Nalani Wakita, Alexander Lowe, and Griffin Cork star.
From writer, director and producer Carmelo Chimera (After Masks), Sin Eater arrives on DVD and On Demand today, Tuesday, March 15, 2022, from Indican Pictures.
“Inspired by the horrifying Sin Eater folklore, the creepy thriller of the same name follows Christine (Jessie Nerud; She Walks the Woods) a young woman who is on the run from her shadowy past.
“After suffering a terrifying injury, she finds herself alone and stranded in a remote town harboring a dark secret. As she tries to recuperate, she slowly begins to discover intense, bizarre religious phenomena occurring around her. With no one to trust and her time running out, Christine realizes that she will have to fight her inner demons as well as the actual demons who are trying to take her soul in order to make it out alive.”
Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Devil’s Rejects), Danny Bohnen (The Last Son), Scotty Bohnen (The Last Son), and Scott Moore (After Masks) also star.
The final new release for March 15th is Monster Python, a Chinese giant snake monster movie that’s now available here in the United States on both Digital and DVD.
In director Zhang Dicai‘s Monster Python, “A film crew shooting in an abandoned village use a collection of large eggs that they find, as props for their movie. Only to discover that the mother of the eggs would kill to get them back.”
Dai Ji Ping, Qian Wang, and Wu Hao star.
This Thursday, March 17th, Grabbers director Jon Wright is back with the creature feature Unwelcome (formerly The Little People), described by the filmmaker as Gremlins meets Straw Dogs.
The film will open in U.S. theaters from Well Go USA on March 17, 2022. In addition, AMC Networks’ Shudder—the premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural—has negotiated exclusive North American streaming rights with Well Go, with the film set to premiere later in 2022 following the conclusion of the theatrical window.
Unwelcome, which is directed by Irish-born Jon Wright (Grabbers, Robot Overlords) and based on an original screenplay by Mark Stay, stars Hannah John-Kamen (Red Sonja, Black Mirror, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Ready Player One) and Douglas Booth (Loving Vincent, hit Netflix film The Dirt, Jupiter Ascending, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) as a couple who escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish mythology, the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid.
Shudder gets a brand new exclusive horror movie with the release of The Bunker Game this Thursday, March 17, which turns a twisted game into a terrifying fight for survival.
“Laura is an actress in a LARP (Live Action Role Playing) game where participants play the survivors of an atomic war who live underground in a sealed bunker. After several mysterious accidents, the game is interrupted and the players leave the bunker while the staff remain behind to investigate the disappearance of Greg, the game’s mastermind.
“They soon find themselves trapped inside and in peril as they begin to die in mysterious ways. The group realizes that someone or something paranormal is playing a twisted game with them which quickly plunges into a terrifying fight for survival.”
We move to Friday, March 18th with this week’s biggest horror release, the return of Ti West with A24’s X, which again will be available ONLY in theaters this coming weekend.
Meagan wrote in her rave review of X, “A deceptively simple setup gives way to a go-for-broke horror-comedy that leaves you breathless, both from laughter and nail-biting tension.”
“In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast soon find themselves in a desperate fight for their lives.”
Brittany Snow (Prom Night) will star alongside Mia Goth (Suspiria), Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) (“Creepshow”), Martin Henderson (The Ring), Owen Campbell (Super Dark Times), Stephen Ure (Deathgasm), and Scream‘s Jenna Ortega in the A24-produced and financed project.
This Friday also marks the release of the Sam Raimi-produced Umma in theaters.
Iris K. Shim wrote the script and directed Umma.
Umma follows Sandra Oh as Amanda, living a quiet life with her daughter (Fivel Stewart) on an American farm. But when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother. The cast also includes Dermot Mulroney, Odeya Rush, MeeWha Alana Lee and Tom Yi.
Through the banner Raimi Productions, Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi are the producers. Umma is also executive produced by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark).
Mariama Diallo’s feature debut Master, starring Regina Hall, Zoe Renee, and Amber Gray, will premiere globally on Friday, March 18 on Amazon Prime Video.
In Master, “Three women strive to find their place at a prestigious New England university whose frosty elitism may disguise something more sinister. Professor Gail Bishop (Regina Hall) has recently been promoted to “Master” of a residence hall, the first time at storied Ancaster College that a Black woman has held the post. Determined to breathe new life into a centuries-old tradition, Gail soon finds herself wrapped up in the trials and tribulations of Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee), an energetic and optimistic Black freshman.
“Jasmine’s time at Ancaster hits a snag early on when she’s assigned a dorm room that is rumored to be haunted.
“Things get worse when Jasmine clashes in the classroom with Liv Beckman (Amber Gray), a professor in the middle of her own racially charged tenure review. As Gail tries to maintain order and fulfill the duties of a Master, the cracks begin to show in Ancaster’s once-immaculate facade. After a career spent fighting to make it into Ancaster’s inner circle, Gail is confronted with the horrifying prospect of what lies beneath, her question ultimately becoming not whether the school is haunted, but by whom.”
Meagan Navarro reviewed Master for Bloody Disgusting at Sundance in January, writing that the film delivers “intelligent, creepy, and complex horror that makes Diallo one to watch.”
Netflix‘s Black Crab premieres this Friday as well, a new Swedish movie starring Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) that brings a post-apocalyptic winter to the streaming service.
“During a long, harsh winter, six soldiers embark on a covert mission across a frozen archipelago, risking their lives to transport a mysterious package that could end the war.
“As they enter hostile enemy territory, they have no idea what dangers lie ahead or who—if anyone—they can trust. But for speed skater turned soldier Caroline Edh, the mission is about something else entirely.”
Prometheus star Noomi Rapace, who also executive produced, stars alongside Jakob Oftebro, Erik Enge, Dar Salim, Ardalan Esmaili, Aliette Opheim, and David Dencik.
The film is based on the book Black Crab by Jerker Virdborg. Adam Berg directed Black Crab, which he co-wrote with Pelle Rådström. Watch the official Black Crab trailer below.
Billed as a “Hitchcockian thriller,” Netflix‘s Windfall is also available this Friday.
Windfall is being described by Netflix as “A Hitchcockian thriller following a wealthy couple who arrive at their vacation home only to find it’s being robbed.”
Jason Segel, Lily Collins, and Jesse Plemons star, so that’s a pretty solid cast for this one. Charlie McDowell (The One I Love) directed the film, written by Justin Lader (The Discovery) and Andrew Kevin Walker (Brainscan, Seven, 8MM, Sleepy Hollow, The Wolfman).
Producers include Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Charlie McDowell, Jason Segel, Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons, and Jack Selby. Executive producers include David Duque Estrada, Elika Portnoy, Rick Covert, Andrew Kevin Walker, and Justin Lader.
