What’s the best gift you’ve ever received from an employer? A voucher? A box of chocolates? Maybe a company paperweight? Well, if you worked for Nintendo and your name is Takaya Imamura, then you’re definitely the winner of this competition.
The legendary designer, famous for the F-Zero car designs, creating Majora’s Mask‘s unusual map maker Tingle and the terrifying Moon, as well as introducing Fox McCloud and friends to the world, left Nintendo over a year ago. And today, Imamura shared with the world Nintendo’s parting gift to him:
An in-app translation of the tweet text reads as follows:
A treasure received from the team when leaving the company. It’s been a year in a blink of an eye, but how are you all doing?
This custom Game & Watch — with a Mii in the top left corner that looks like Imamura, ‘SUPER GAME CREATOR’ printed above the screen, and his name embellished in the traditional Nintendo logo style at the bottom — is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a while. And it looks like you can play Ball on this one (which was the very first Game & Watch title) complete with Mario’s head on there, which suggests that this is very likely the Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. console that released back in 2020 with a special custom case.
We can’t believe it’s already been that long since the designer left Nintendo, but at least we can appreciate those car designs in the recent Switch Online release of F-Zero X, eh?
