James Gunn recently revealed his top three favorite movies of all time. The director started his career in the industry as a screenwriter during the mid-’90s. He began directing in 2006, making his debut with the horror-comedy film Slither before moving onto the superhero genre. Gunn directed Super in 2010 before entering the highly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking charge of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. However, Gunn did enter some controversy in 2018 following some old tweets, with Disney cutting ties with the director before re-hiring him in March 2019.
Despite initially being an MCU man, Gunn also moved into the DCEU, releasing the very entertaining The Suicide Squad last year. Despite being a box office disappointment (partly due to the pandemic), the film received a lot of praise and is regarded as an improvement from the 2016 version. Gunn’s latest project, Peacemaker released last month and ended its first season in mid-February. The DC spin-off show has also been another success for Gunn, scoring 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving thoroughly positive reviews, with a second season soon to follow.
In response to a favorite movies thread on Twitter, James Gunn revealed his favorite movies of all time. The director revealed that his top three films of any genre are The Long Goodbye, Eternal Sunshine, and Once Upon a Time in the West. Gunn also followed up with other favorite movie lists such as “favorite Kung Fu films” or “favorite Studio Ghibli films.” Check out the tweet below:
It is interesting to see Gunn’s three choices, with all three films being considered as cult classics that have influenced the movie industry. Once Upon a Time in the West notably has been considered as one, if not the greatest Spaghetti Western film of all time, establishing the “once upon a time…” naming convention in Hollywood. Eternal Sunshine is the most recent pick out of the three and the only film released in the 21st century. The film has a notable soundtrack that includes “Mr. Blue Sky” by the Electric Light Orchestra, also used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s opening scene – perhaps Eternal Sunshine’s music has influenced Gunn always to add an entertainingly good soundtrack to his films.
Gunn revealing his favorite films of all time expresses how much of a film fanatic the director truly is, with the three films stretching from early Hollywood to the early 2000s. As well as that, his three choices are all different genres, showing he does not particularly stick to a specific type of movie and likes to explore different genres. All three choices are top films and are likely to have helped influence Gunn’s memorable film style.
