Former star of The Bachelor Arie Luyendyk Jr. got down on one knee and proposed to Lauren Burnham, again. Arie’s history with Lauren was tainted when he dated 28 other women at the same time during their first meeting in 2018. At first, the handsome racing driver fell in love with Becca Kufrin, a blue-eyed brunette from Minnesota. The world was enthralled with their budding romance as Arie pulled out a ring, blinding the cameras as it sparkled in the sun.

But after departing from Machu Picchu, the Bachelor decided to make a switcheroo. He dumped his fiancée Becca on-air and then reunited with Lauren. Three years later, Arie and Lauren are still together. They married in January of 2019 and welcomed their daughter Alessi in the same year. After attempting to induce labor naturally, Lauren gave birth again to twins Senna and Lux. Despite the joys of fatherhood, Arie stated he was now finished having kids and joked about getting a vasectomy.

Recently, Lauren posted a Youtube video of Arie “re-proposing” on the beaches of Maui, this time with a new ring. But before he popped the question, Arie explained something to the camera: “The ring I gave her on The Bachelor was obviously payed for by The Bachelor. Don’t know if you guys know that, but that’s how it works.“ He shared his next words carefully, saying, “We never really felt like it was something I chose for her.” Later in the video, the couple displayed photos of the proposal. Lauren flashed a smile as she accepted the diamond, her hair flying in the ocean breeze. Afterward, the former Bachelor popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

Arie’s comment reveals an alternative history to The Bachelor, a show which presents each story like a genuine fairy tale. Many contestants have shared that, in reality, the process feels unnatural, like they’re trying to force a romantic experience for the cameras. No castmate is allowed to discuss the secrets about production, however, because they’re required to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Even so, certain details have slipped through the cracks, like the alleged use of alcohol to stir up drama.

With Arie’s second proposal, he gave viewers a glimpse behind The Bachelor‘s most sacred component: the ring. Lauren Bushnell’s diamond was estimated at $95,000 in 2016. Jesse Csincsak, from DeAnna Pappas’ season of The Bachelorette, said the winners of the show (each man and woman who walk away engaged) get to keep the rings if they remain engaged for two years. If the couple breaks up before this time, they must return the ring to ABC, losing everything. Of course, none of this will ever be discussed in a Final Rose ceremony. The franchise wants viewers to believe in the ring as a genuine symbol of true love.
